TO BE FULL OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IS TO BE FILLED WITH GOD’S WORD
“Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry. 3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” 4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’ 5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6 And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you worship me, it will all be yours.” 8 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’ 9 The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written: “‘He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; 11 they will lift you up in their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’ 12 Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ 13 When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.” (Luke 4:1—13)
Jesus was led into the wilderness, where the devil was tempted for forty days. Jesus was led into the wilderness FULL OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. He was led into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit often leads us into places where we may face temptation, but he is not the one who does the tempting. John said, Jesus was led there by the Spirit, but the devil did the tempting.
In our lives this year, we will face the temptation of various kinds. What I am reminded of now from the apostle John, in my life as a believer, the SPIRIT IS WORKING in me, and at the same time, THE DEVIL IS ALSO WORKING AGAINST ME. This is what I am reminded of what to understand when facing the temptation of various kinds.
Today, the Holy Spirit reminded me of these truths to know as I journey in 2022, facing temptation. I must be LED by the Spirit of God. The truth is, it does not matter where the temptation happens. What matters is, am I being led by the Spirit of God to be where I am when temptations strike.
Even though I am LED by the Spirit, I will still face temptation. Temptations do not stop just because the Spirit is leading my life. I must be FULL OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. Just like being LED by the Spirit does not stop temptations, so it is with being FULL OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. The devil and temptations do not take a vacation. They keep coming against those who are LED AND FULL of the Holy Spirit.
God never tempted us but tested us and led us to places where his testing will occur, and at the same time, the devil uses the same testing to do his tempting. God’s testing in the wilderness is to strengthen the power of our free will to choose. The devil works to use the same opportunity to weaken us to be going against God’s purpose in testing.
The devil used scriptures against Jesus in the wilderness. Jesus had to choose against the flesh, pride, and temptation. Jesus countered temptation with the word of God. TO BE FULL OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, A PERSON MUST BE FULL OF GOD’S WORD. No believer can face temptation in the wilderness of life and overcome it UNLESS WE ARE FULL OF GOD’S WORD. TO BE FULL OF THE HOLY SPIRIT is not some mystical experience. Without the WORD of God in us, the Holy Spirit is not there either.
It is the HOLY SPIRIT who speaks to us NOW and reminds us of the words of Jesus in us. If the word of God is NOT in us, how can he remind us of what Jesus wants to speak to our situation and during the time of temptation? This is an important lesson to learn. If the word of God is not in me, I cannot be led around by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit works with the words that in the words of David said: “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” (Psalms 119:11) What King David is saying, without the word of God in me, I will fall quickly to temptation.
Jesus came out of his wilderness experience; He overcame the devil and passed the testing. But the devil never gives up. He waits for ANOTHER OPPORTUNE TIME to strike again. This year is going to be a spiritual warfare year. The devil knows he does not have much time. So, temptations and various trials will increase in tenacity and persistence against the work of the Holy Spirit in all of us. Stay alert, be led around by the Holy Spirit, and fill our hearts with God’s word this year.
I am determined to fill my Heart and Mind with God’s word daily this year so I may be full of the Holy Spirit and be led around by him through the word in me. My prayer desire is for the Holy Spirit to enlighten my heart more and more of the power of God’s word to guide and lead me, rebuke and correct me and speak to me always about his purpose and will.
Holy Spirit, fill me afresh this year with your presence and power. I ask that you lead me and guide me this year. Thank you for speaking to me on behalf of Jesus by reminding me how to combat temptation. I submit to you all of my plans and ask that by your word guide and lead me. Speak clearly to me when I am struggling with temptations of all sorts. Give me a love for your word and help me live accordingly so I may not succumb to the temptation of the devil. Your word will I hide in my heart so I may not sin against you. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
