TITLE: THE DANGER OF SELF PROMOTION, LEADS TO SELF DECEPTION
SCRIPTURE:
“In the course of time, Absalom provided himself with a chariot and horses and with fifty men to run ahead of him. 2 He would get up early and stand by the side of the road leading to the city gate. Whenever anyone came with a complaint to be placed before the king for a decision, Absalom would call out to him, “What town are you from?” He would answer, “Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel.” 3 Then Absalom would say to him, “Look, your claims are valid and proper, but there is no representative of the king to hear you.” 4 And Absalom would add, “If only I were appointed judge in the land! Then everyone who has a complaint or case could come to me and I would see that they receive justice.” 5 Also, whenever anyone approached him to bow down before him, Absalom would reach out his hand, take hold of him and kiss him. 6 Absalom behaved in this way toward all the Israelites who came to the king asking for justice, and so he stole the hearts of the people of Israel.” (2Samuel 15:1—6)
OBSERVATION:
Absalom is a perfect picture of a person who promote themselves. The Bible said, Let someone else praise you, and not your own mouth, an outsider, and not your own lips. The Bible also continues to teach, For promotion come neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he puts down one and sets up another. Absalom provided himself with a chariot, horses and fifty men to run ahead of him. Having a chariot for oneself, and horses and men to run ahead of you must have turned the heads of the people.
He gets up early and set himself by the side of the road leading to the city gate. He would receive anyone’s complaint that was meant for the king alone so the king can decide. Self-promotion always leads to self-deception. A person who promotes self, always acted as if he/ she cares about what people are really going through. A self-promoted person cares only about power and position and personal agendas.
Absalom created an image to the people by making the people believes he truly cares about their problems. He made accusations and put down those in leadership. In essence, Absalom, was saying to the people he intercepted, NO ONE in the king’s office understand what you are going through. I wish I was the one working there, I would have given you what you need.
A self-promoted person makes themselves out to be the savior of people. Also, whenever anyone approached him to bow down before him, Absalom would reach out his hand, take hold of him and kiss him. He really acted out a part to seemed that he his humble and understanding. All these actions and behavior was for a personal purpose and intention for power and not for the people. Absalom BEHAVED IN THIS WAY toward all the Israelites who came to the king asking for justice, AND SO HE STOLE THE HEARTS OF THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL. I am reminded to be careful of behaving like Absalom to pretend and behave in the way he did, because of power and position. It is very dangerous for other leaders to wrestle and steal the hearts of people by pretending that they truly understand and have people’s best interest at heart.
APPLICATION:
I will keep my heart with all diligence and have the fear of God over me not to use people to gain power and position. Promotion comes from God, and I will wait my turn if that is God’s will. I am humbled and reminded by the danger of behaving like Absalom who only think of himself and his agenda. I must walk in the fear of God always.
PRAYER:
Jesus thank you for opening my eyes to the danger of behaving like Absalom. Help me to walk in your humility and serve you with a heart that is desirable by you. Lead me to point people to You instead of making people feel like they needed me more than coming to you. I ask that you teach me how to love people rather than use them to support me and my agendas. Forgive me Jesus for times I seem to behave like Absalom. I want to walk in your ways and have the kind of behavior that honors you and others. Amen!
