アルタクセルクセス王の第二十年、ニサンの月のことであった。王はぶどう酒を前にし、わたしがぶどう酒を取って、王に差し上げていた。わたしは王の前で暗い表情をすることはなかったが　（ネヘミヤ記2：1）

王はわたしに尋ねた。「暗い表情をしているが、どうかしたのか。病気ではあるまい。何か心に悩みがあるにちがいない。」わたしは非常に恐縮して、王に答えた。「王がとこしえに生き長らえられますように。わたしがどうして暗い表情をせずにおれましょう。先祖の墓のある町が荒廃し、城門は火で焼かれたままなのです。」（ネヘミヤ記2：2-3）

すると王は、「何を望んでいるのか」と言った。わたしは天にいます神に祈って、王に答えた。「もしも僕がお心に適い、王にお差し支えがなければ、わたしをユダに、先祖の墓のある町にお遣わしください。町を再建したいのでございます。」王は傍らに座っている王妃と共に、「旅にはどれほどの時を要するのか。いつ帰れるのか」と尋ねた。わたしの派遣について王が好意的であったので、どれほどの期間が必要なのかを説明し（ネヘミヤ記2：4-7）

また、神殿のある都の城門に梁を置くために、町を取り巻く城壁のためとわたしが入る家のために木材をわたしに与えるように、と王の森林管理者アサフにあてた書状もいただきとうございます。」神の御手がわたしを守ってくださったので、王はわたしの願いをかなえてくれた。　（ネヘミヤ記2：8）

サンバラト、トビヤ、アラブ人ゲシェム、その他わたしたちの敵は、わたしが城壁を再建し、崩れた所が一つとして残らず、あとは城門に扉を付けるだけだということを耳にした。サンバラトとゲシェムはわたしのもとに使者をよこして、「オノの谷にあるケフィリムで会おう」と言った。彼らはわたしに危害を加えようとたくらんだのであった。そこでわたしは使者を送って言わせた。「わたしは大きな工事をしているので、行けません。中断して出かけたのでは、どうして工事が終わるでしょうか。」
彼らは同じことを四度も言ってきたが、わたしも同じように返事を繰り返した。（ネヘミヤ記6：1-4）

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.（Jeremiah 29:11 NIV）

When I heard these words, I sat down and wept and mourned for days; and I was fasting and praying before the God of heaven. I said, “I beseech You, O Lord God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who preserves the covenant and lovingkindness for those who love Him and keep His commandments, let Your ear now be attentive and Your eyes open to hear the prayer of Your servant which I am praying before You now, day and night, on behalf of the sons of Israel Your servants, confessing the sins of the sons of Israel which we have sinned against You; I and my father’s house have sinned. We have acted very corruptly against You and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the ordinances which You commanded Your servant Moses. Remember the word which You commanded Your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful I will scatter you among the peoples;but if you return to Me and keep My commandments and do them, though those of you who have been scattered were in the most remote part of the heavens, I will gather them from there and will bring them to the place where I have chosen to cause My name to dwell.’ They are Your servants and Your people whom You redeemed by Your great power and by Your strong hand. O Lord, I beseech You, may Your ear be attentive to the prayer of Your servant and the prayer of Your servants who delight to revere Your name, and make Your servant successful today and grant him compassion before this man.”　（Nehemiah 1:4-11 NASB）

Early the following spring, in the month of Nisan, during the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes’ reign, I was serving the king his wine. I had never before appeared sad in his presence.（Nehemiah 2:1 NLT）

So the king asked me, “Why are you looking so sad? You don’t look sick to me. You must be deeply troubled.” Then I was terrified, but I replied, “Long live the king! How can I not be sad? For the city where my ancestors are buried is in ruins, and the gates have been destroyed by fire.”（Nehemiah 2:2,3 NLT）

The king asked, “Well, how can I help you?” With a prayer to the God of heaven, I replied, “If it pleases the king, and if you are pleased with me, your servant, send me to Judah to rebuild the city where my ancestors are buried.” The king, with the queen sitting beside him, asked, “How long will you be gone? When will you return?” After I told him how long I would be gone, the king agreed to my request. 　　　　　　　　　　（Nehemiah 2:4-6 NLT）

I also said to the king, “If it pleases the king, let me have letters addressed to the governors of the province west of the Euphrates River, instructing them to let me travel safely through their territories on my way to Judah（Nehemiah 2:7 NLT）

And please give me a letter addressed to Asaph, the manager of the king’s forest, instructing him to give me timber. I will need it to make beams for the gates of the Temple fortress, for the city walls, and for a house for myself.” And the king granted these requests, because the gracious hand of God was on me.（Nehemiah 2:8 NLT）

Now when it was reported to Sanballat, Tobiah, to Geshem the Arab and to the rest of our enemies that I had rebuilt the wall, and that no breach remained in it, although at that time I had not set up the doors in the gates, then Sanballat and Geshem sent a message to me, saying, “Come, let us meet together at Chephirim in the plain of Ono.” But they were planning to harm me. So I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work and I cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?” They sent messages to me four times in this manner, and I answered them in the same way. (Nehemiah 6:1-4 NASB)
